Astoria Financial is the holding company for Astoria Bank (formerly Astoria Federal), one of the largest thrifts in New York with deposits totaling $9.7 billion. The bank has more than 85 branches in and around New York City and on Long Island, in addition to a network of third-party mortgage brokers spanning more than a dozen states and Washington, DC. It offers standard deposit products such as CDs and checking, savings, and retirement accounts. With these funds, Astoria Bank primarily writes loans and invests in mortgage-backed securities. Subsidiary AF Insurance Agency sells life and property/casualty coverage to  bank customers. New York Community Bancorp agreed to acquire Astoria in late 2015.
